Salzburg, worth a visit
Sights and landmarks in Salzburg's old town
The whole of Salzburg's old town is listed and since 1996 it has been part for the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and rightly so: with impressive buildings, some of which dating back to the Roman era, and most of them from the 15th and 16th century, Salzburg presents architectural and cultural history in the most beautiful way.
The city of Salzburg Festival is always worth a visit, all year round. For cultural bliss, for shopping or for a tour through history – in order to “breathe in” the special atmosphere.
Baroque buildings and Italian flair
Salzburg's archbishops were passionate builders and loved nothing more than to commission Italian architects to build palaces and gardens. Mirabell Palace with its gardens is still a must-see for every visitor in Salzburg. Hellbrunn Palace with its water games leaves not one dry eye, quite literally. All these buildings are protected by Hohensalzburg Castle, the fortress that sits enthroned on Festungsberg.
Visit the Residenz premises and get an idea about the baroque architecture. In the State Apartments you can breathe history and in the Residenz Gallery marvel at artworks from the 16th to 19th century.
Mozart and Co.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, prodigy born in Salzburg, left his hometown after disagreements with the archbishop. What he left behind, apart from his legendary operas, are his birthplace on Getreidegasse and the residence on Markartplatz – both houses accommodate museums nowadays.
The maestro is still celebrated, for instance during the annual Mozart week or at the Salzburg Festival that attracts stars, celebrities and music enthusiasts from all over the world during the summer months.
During a walk on one of the two local mountains – Mönchsberg or Kapuzinerberg, or at one of the romantically mystic and most of all ancient cemeteries in Salzburg city – find various sights as well as peace and relaxation in the middle of the city. For instance at St. Sebastian's Cemetery or St. Peter's Cemetery with Early Christian catacombs. Many parks in the very green city of Salzburg also offer recreation.
Salzburg's old town with all its boutiques is perfect for shopping. Visit luxury labels on famous Getreidegasse or buy fresh regional farmers' products at “Schranne”, it's up to you.
Guests at Hotel Goldgasse enjoy the 4-star hotel's location in the centre of the old town: Goldgasse – a sight in itself – serves as the perfect starting point for discovery tours through the World Cultural Heritage Salzburg with most sights in immediate vicinity.
