Free ensemble theatre in the city of Mozart
Elisabethbühne is as Salzburg Schauspielhaus one of Austria's biggest free ensemble theatre. With ca. ten theatre performances and a children's play per season there are performances on both theatre stages taking place from September to early July.
Amongst theatre makers it is known as “an act of resistance against loss of education, the un-democratisation of society and the world's growing commercialisation”, this is one of the many aims of Salzburg Schauspielhaus, which is pursued with wonderful and inspirational productions on Elisabethbühne close to Salzburg's old town in the south of Salzburg.
What an act!
The carefully selected programme offers a great range for all theatre enthusiasts of all ages, from antiquity to classical and modern age, from tragedy to comedy up to new, experimental theatre genres. The theatre is connected to an acting school and a publisher for children's musicals.
With around 10-14 in-house production per year the Salzburg Schauspielhaus is Austria's biggest free theatre. A focus of Elisabethbühne is, amongst others, to support and promote young artists as well as staging premieres. Writing commissions and script development is also part of Schauspielhaus' work.
